General Motors | UX writer

In-vehicle UX writer supporting a variety of apps across the vehicle experience.

Summary

I led efforts to standardize all communications that were sent out from ABE, ensuring older communications were brought up to meet the brand guidelines.

Through collaboration with my design counterparts, I also helped define and craft content for end-to-end journeys for users on features, leading to an experience that was simple to use and easy to understand.

Projects

GM Charging App
The GM Charging App is a one-stop shop in the vehicle for all things charging. The charging app allows users to create a home charging schedule, change their charge cord settings, and get a real-time view into a charging session. In addition to the work done on the center display for the charging app, I also worked on writing simple, clear messaging for the vehicle cluster that enables drivers to see the status of their charging session just by peeking in the window.

Connections App/Projections Apps
For the Connections App, I partnered with the product designer to redesign the Bluetooth pairing experience for our customers. The result of this project was a more straightforward experience, simplifying the number of steps it takes to pair a device as well as creating a less cluttered experience to manage connected devices.

For Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, I wrote VO scripts for external partners to create how-to videos for our customers.

User Profile/Set Up Wizard
The Set Up Wizard is a multi-step experience for new customers to create a user profile for their vehicle, connect the vehicle with their Google account, pair their phone and set up privacy and app pemissions for all of the built-in Google Apps that GM has in their vehicles. For this project I partnered with a product designer to completely redesign the experience, simplifying the messaging to remove friction as well as creating clear indications on the steps a user will need to take during setup.

In-Vehicle Style Guide
I facilitated content audits to ensure that all text written for the vehicle met GM’s standards and style guide. In addition to performing audits, I wrote new entries for the style guide as well as collaborated with teammates to review and edit their entries.

Context Descriptions for Localization
For all new strings written for the vehicle, I collaborated with the GM Localization team to provide context on all text written so taht the strings could be translated accurately for all markets.

Lessons learned

The wide range of projects that I worked on at GM allowed me to collaborate with long list of product designers, development teams, and product stakeholders. Each of these products had different and sometimes conflicting guidelines and constraints that copy had to work within.

It was a delicate balance between meeting regulatory restraints and third party requirements, while ensuring the messaging remained consistent across every experience and aligned with each brands style guide.
